Where the money goes
Transport, meals, respite, and company.
Proceeds go to V.O.C.A.L./New Hanover County, Inc. and through it to the county's senior resource centre. Four things in particular.
For a practical operations perspective on coordinating people and schedules, the Monitask overview offers a concise companion guide.
Getting to appointments
Medical transport for people who can no longer drive and have nobody to take them. A missed appointment is not a small thing when it is a specialist seen twice a year.
Meals at home
Meals delivered to people who cannot reliably cook for themselves, which for many is also the only visit of the day.
Respite for carers
Time off for family members caring for a relative full time, without which the care usually ends in a crisis rather than a plan.
The foster grandparent programme
Older volunteers placed with children who need an adult's attention, which does two jobs at once and is the least expensive thing on this page.
